Morning, Afternoon, & Night

Dec 27, 2017

This morning we were going to take the kids over to the school playground to ride their bikes, but it was so cold out that our three year old couldn’t even hold onto the handlebars because he was too busy trying to stuff his little hands into his coat pockets. So we came home and they played and I worked on a thousand piece puzzle instead.

This afternoon my husband was putting together the new twin bed for our three year old and when he got to the end he realized he’d forgotten to buy the slats that go across the bottom for the mattress to sit on top of. So this evening after dinner we drove the 45 minutes out to Ikea to get the bed slats, let the kids play in the toy section for a bit, and then drove home. When we got the kids in bed in the other room my husband set out to put the slats on and finish the bed when he realized we’d bought the wrong size. Later he told me it felt like, “Idaho?” I interrupted. “Yeah.”

I spent tonight began slogging through the bookkeeping for my business. It’s a big long mess from Jan 1 up through today. I told myself I’d be on it from day one this time around, but the truth is it’s just a mess starting a business because at first everything’s going on the family debit and credit cards and then you finally get the business bank account and in this case my business debit card was being dumb for months (the guy at the bank just didn’t set it up right) and I wasn’t sure which electronic receipts I needed to print out (turns out: all of them), so… it’s all a mess. I’m going through one month, one account, at a time. So far I’ve finished up Jan-May (sort of). At this point I don’t even know what I wish I’d done differently, but I sure hope I can finish this game of catch up by the end of the week because I’d pretty much rather be doing anything else.

Goals, you guys

Only 6 more days of writing on my blog every day! Only 6 more days of me sitting in bed, finished with everything else, thinking, “bah, I gotta write on my blog.” Slogging along to the very end.

Christmas Eve

Dec 24, 2017

Are you getting excited for me to not write on my blog every day?! Because I am! Briefly considered giving myself an early Christmas present by declaring the year of blogging over, but, alas, we trudge onward into what’s sure to be an entirely anti climatic finish on Dec 31.

In other news, today was a wonderful Christmas Eve with the family. We went to church where we enjoyed just one hour (instead of the usual 3) and lots of musical numbers instead of talks. Pretty nice.

Then we went to Nana and Papa’s house for fun with all the cousins and aunts and uncles. Early dinner of yummy tamales, pass around gifts, and enough fourth advent treats and goodies to keep me fat until next year. Papa also read the story of the nativity while the kids acted it out.

When we got home the kids opened their new matching Christmas jammies and we read scriptures and Christmas stories together for bedtime.

When they were settled in bed we played Santa and have mostly just enjoyed our quiet, peaceful, cozy home. Feeling so incredibly blessed for the gift of our Savior and a chance to celebrate it together.

Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night!

Christmas Eve Eve

Dec 23, 2017

I really enjoy working hard and setting goals and reaching forward and I think a really important part of that is knowing when to sit down and enjoy. On my own, as a couple, and as a family we’ve worked hard this past week or two–and especially the past couple days–to get our home ready for Christmas. We’ve made and chosen gifts and wrapped them up and decorated and cleaned and done so many small things to get everything ready so that we can really just sit back and enjoy Christmas. And you know what? I think we’ve done everything we needed and wanted to do. So today we relaxed and sat around decorating Christmas sugar cookies together and for all of Christmas Eve and Christmas Day we can just relax and enjoy and that quiet, non-rushed time together is perhaps the gift I’m looking forward to most of all and what I wish for all of you this Christmas. Merry Christmas Eve Eve!

Yipes!

Dec 22, 2017

Ruh-roh. Woke up to go to the bathroom and realized I didn’t write on my blog before falling asleep! Eeek! First time all year! Haha. But I’m still counting this because, first of all, it’s still kinda the middle of the night and I haven’t woken up for the day for reals yet and, second of all, we spent the day cleaning and running errands and getting things done and by the time I sat down after the kids went to bed I was just plain worn out and I couldn’t even finish watching White Christmas because my cold caught up with me big time and I couldn’t keep my eyes open and, third of all, because it’s my blog and I do what I want. So there.

Embracing the Smallness

Dec 18, 2017

There have been times

When I fully embraced it

Perhaps unaware of

The smallness to it

And times when I felt big

And important

And above it

But the truth is

It’s at the heart of me somehow

I was back at it tonight

Embracing the smallness

And I hope I’ll never kid myself again

That I’m above it

Those quirky little

Labor intensive

Detail-oriented

Cheesy heartfelt

Heirloom

Handmade

Felt ornaments
