Active storage only

Sep 29, 2017

Bry had the day off work today, so we bought a bunch of frames from Ikea and then went home and spent most of the rest of the day swapping family photos into new frames and hanging up pictures and displaying keepsakes, etc. around the house.

There are a couple relatively small boxes that we put some keepsakes or extra photos back in to go back to our basement storage, but most of the things we own that we want to display are out now and it’s so nice. Not just because they’re out where they can be enjoyed instead of taking up a bunch of storage space, but also because this is the first time in almost 10 years of marriage that we’ve been able to actually set up house for real.

We also finally pulled a bunch of books and notebooks out of storage. There are boxes of old journals and photo albums too, but we’ll have to leave those in the basement until we buy more shelves and figure out a place to put them. Also hoping to get some kind of hutch or china cabinet at some point so we can pull our nice dishes out of storage too.

My ultimate goal is to only be “storing” seasonal items like holiday decorations and other things we need, but don’t need our all the time, and the few keepsakes we don’t have a place for but don’t want to get rid of. In other words, I don’t want to be storing anything we don’t actually use. I already opened up and sorted through a bunch of miscellaneous boxes a couple weeks ago and we took a couple loads to the thrift store, so we’re getting there.

Anyway, it feels so nice to be making our house that much more of a home and be getting as much stuff as possible out of storage too.

Secret E-mail (names withheld)

Sep 24, 2017

Husband: (writing email)

Me: What’re you doing?

Husband: Writing an email.

Me: Secret email?

Husband: It’s about a church thing.

Me: Oooh juicy.

Husband: It’s not a secret. You can read it if you want to.

Me: I didn’t really think you were doing anything secret.

Husband: I don’t think I’m capable of doing anything secret.

Me: Either you’re really good at it and do it all the time or you’re terrible at it and I always know where you hide my Christmas presents.

Husband: You don’t know where I hide your Christmas presents! I just tell you not to look in a certain area so you don’t accidentally find them.

Here to stay

Sep 22, 2017

This evening once the kids were in bed we finally pulled out all the artwork and keepsakes and framed photos and started hanging them on the walls. We’ve lived in our new house for a few months now, so I was surprised what a difference it made when we started adding some of our special things around the house. It already felt like home, but hanging pictures and artwork made it feel cozy and gave the house life. We stayed up late unwrapping things we haven’t seen since our first move several years ago and finding places for them around the house. We still have a long way to go, but it felt good tonight to finally commit and nail some holes in the walls.
