Sitting here at the doctor’s office waiting for  the first of many weekly ultrasounds I’ll be having from here on out, so I thought I’d make use of the time and write now instead of right before bed like usual. 

Speaking of beds (and by bed I mean mattress), I think we’re going to buy a new one. If so, this would be the first time ever in our nine years of marriage that we will have ever owned a new one. 

When we first got married we moved into a 500 sq ft apartment with tiny bedrooms, so we got a (used) full size bed, which we happily abandoned when we moved across the country a few years later. Then we bought a (used) queen size bed for $50 off craigslist when Bryan started grad school and have had that mattress and boxspring combo ever since, which we’ve just had sitting right on the floor for most of the six years we’ve had it. 

That current mattress could best be described as slightly better than sleeping on the floor. 

Olivia has a toddler sized bunk bed from Ikea (that one that flips to be a bunk bed or a single bed) that she still fits comfortably on, but she doesn’t really need a bunk bed in her room and it’s kind of a pain for Bryan & me to climb on and off of and change the sheets, plus it just takes up more visual room… whatever it doesn’t matter. Point is, it’s great at being a bunk bed, but dumb as a single bed. So as Bryan was disassembling it the other day to prep for our move, we discussed the possibility of storing the bunk bed in the basement and giving Olivia our current queen size mattress and boxspring and getting a new one for ourselves. 

For sure the best mattress I’ve ever slept on in my life was at a hotel we stayed in when Bryan had a job interview a couple years ago. We even called later to ask what kind of mattress it was and they told us it was a Tempurpedic and which kind. We’ve looked at them a few times and they’re several thousand dollars (eesh), but yesterday when my friend and I were at the park with our kids she told me about a king size memory foam mattress they bought on overstock.com for closer to $400. When I got home I looked them up and the ones I found were closer to $600-$700 for a king size, but still. Even just a regular (not memory foam) queen size mattress from Casper or Tuft & Needle is closer to $800. The ones I was looking at on Overstock had really good reviews and they also ship straight to your house like the other two brands I just mentioned, but I think those two brands do returns/refunds, whereas the ones on Overstock can’t be returned once they’ve been opened. 

Still. 

Bryan and I went to bed last night on ye old cardboard box (a.k.a. our current mattress) feeling very motivated to buy a new one because: duh. If you have experience with any of these things please do weigh in. We probably won’t order one until after we’ve moved into the new house and can measure the rooms and stuff. 

The other benefit, of course, to putting our old/current queen size bed in Olivia’s room is that we can put her in the boys’ room and use her bed as a guest bed if people come to stay with us. And if you’re wondering why we’re ok giving our seven year old a bed we hate, it’s because we’re terrible people. Ha! But really, she’s seven. And she’s currently sleeping on an IKEA kids mattress which, if you can believe it, is even (way, way) worse than our current bed. And, ya know, hopefully we’d upgrade everybody to a non-terrible mattress eventually. 

Anyway, I’d be curious to know if/where you’ve bought new mattresses before and if you have any advice on the matter. In the mean time, I’ll just be hanging out here at the doctor’s office.
