I’ve been thinking a lot lately about fashion. And by a lot I mean occasionally it crosses my mind at random times. And by fashion I mean people who actually leave the house in such a way that they might not mind their picture being taken without warning.
I am not one of those people.
Frankly, I don’t know how to be. I have never cared enough or known enough about make up or skin care or how to do anything with my hair. I buy clothes that are comfortable and that are at least as flattering as possible. And I like to think I do ok, but I’ll be the first to admit that when it comes to fashion I’m not inclined to do much better than ok.
Not that I wouldn’t love to know how to do my make up like a grown woman (or even which make up to buy, for that matter) or how to do my hair or dress like a cool stylish lady. Of course I’d like to walk around looking like, “Oh, I’m so put together and cute and, look! I’m a mom too!” But I honestly wouldn’t even know where to begin.
I recently asked one of my southern friends (who is one of those enviable, thoroughly adorable, classy women who, yes, also happens to be a mom and always looks great anyway and who you might have to scowl at if she wasn’t so genuinely nice and good and hilarious) about some make up and skin care products she’s started using and, you guys, we weren’t even speaking the same language. I have no idea what any of that stuff does, aside from sounding magical and pricey.
I think probably the best case scenario is for someone to take me under their wing and basically make it their life’s mission to dress and style me like that free-spirited girl that Julia Roberts hates in Larry Crowne. (Which, fair warning, is a weird B list movie with some A list actors. Thanks, Netflix.)
Plan B, I suppose, would be living mostly at peace with my mild acne, semi-awkward clothing choices, and hopeless hair and hoping that people love and respect me for who I am.
Kidding! Kidding. That’s plan A. But if there’s some makeover show or a really well-meaning friend with legit skills reading this, then, ya know, I’d be open to a combination of both.
